SpoOoOOky halloween cupcakes

Halloween is knocking on the door and even though we don’t really celebrate it here in Finland I felt like a halloween themed post is a must have. So what would be nicer than share a little recipe of easy halloween cupcakes. Okay yes that was a lie. They are not easy, of well the muffins were piece of cake but the frosting. Just wow my back still hurts. But what wouldn’t I do for you lovely bunch.

And by the way before we start, these are also gluten free yay!

Carrot and cocoa cupcakes: (makes about 14 small or seven big cupcakes)

  • 2 carrots
  • 3½ dl gluten free flours (all-purpose-flour works just fine too)
  • ½ dl unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilja sugar
  • 1¼ tsp baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 can (150g) of crème fraiche
  • 1½ dl rapeseed oil

dl = Desilitre tsp = teaspoon

Orange flavored frosting:

  • 75g unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 500g icing sugar
  • 1 can (200g) of orange flavored cream cheese
  • Black, yellow and red food coloring

1. Grate the carrots. In a small bowl combine flours, cocoa powder, baking powder and vanilla sugar and gently mix using a spoon. In other bowl whisk (gently) the eggs and sugar, just breaking the structure of the eggs. Then add the crème fraiche and rapeseed oil.

2. Mix grated carrots to the egg mixture. Then add the flours etc. using a big spoon to stir and combine the dough. When the batter is smooth divide it to the cupcake liners. Bake in 200 degrees for about 20 minutes.

3. For the icing whisk (again gently) the softened butter until smooth. Add icing sugar whisking all the time with the lowest power of your electric mixer. When all the icing sugar is added, turn the power up a little and whisk until smooth. At this point the mixture should look like flours.  Then add the cold cream cheese and whisk until the batter is smooth but thick.

4. Separate the frosting into a two bowls. For orange color, mix the red and yellow food coloring together. Be really careful to not add too much red. When you have orange color mix it with one of your two frostings. Mix black food coloring with the other frosting.

5. Put your desired tip to a piping bag (I recommend one with star tip). And now this is where it gets hard. So I would say all’s fair. First spoon the orange frosting into the piping bag. I laid the bag to the table and filled half of it with the frosting so it was ‘easier’ to add the black frosting on top of it. Make sure the tip is filled with half of the each frostings too. When you are done with both of the frostings one side of the piping bag should be filled with orange frosting and the other side with black. If you completed, congratulations. If this all sounds too hard you can just simply pipe the cupcakes with orange and black frostings separately.

Good luck with decorating, hope you don’t hurt your bag like I did hehe.

So that’s my little recipe for halloween. Hope it made you crave for some delicious cupcakes and maybe even want you make these. I mean they really do please the aesthetic eye!!

I’ll Give You the Sun: A book that everyone should read

“The sun, stars, ocean, trees, everything. I gave it all up for you.”

I never read books. Not that I don’t like reading, because I absolutely love when a book consumes me. I am just very hard to please. I easily quit reading if I don’t like the story or if I get bored with it. It’s been ages since I have loved a book so much that I couldn’t put  it down. And to be honest I was little skeptical when I bought I’ll give you the sun. But before even noticing I was deep in the story, eating the text with my eyes. And that’s how it should always be. So ladies and gents here is review of a book that I got sucked into.

The story follows twin siblings, Noah and Jude in a different points in their lives. Noah tells the story when he and his sister are close, in a way that only twins can be. And Jude tells the story few years later when both of the twins are broken by horrible tragedy that drove them apart.

When I started the book I immediately fell in love with Noah. His character is really sweet, lovable and lonely. He dedicates his life for arts, and draws everything he sees and feels. He doesn’t have friends until the new boy next door who changes everything.

Jude I truly hated at first. In Noah’s story she is full of life and doing all the crazy things such as cliff diving. She is growing up and leaving Noah behind as she goes. Eventually I understood Jude and her actions and learned to absolutely love her too. In her story she is broken and full of guilt. The book pages are filled with quotes from a bible that she keeps with her. They descrabe her feelings and fit into the story perfectly, for example:

“If bad luck knows who you are become someone else”.

Without releasing themselves both of them only know half the story, which you learn to put together while reading. The story is full of blog twists, big and small. Some you see coming and some will absolutely shock you. Slowly everything falls into a place.

The story is absolutely heartbreaking but yet full of hope and all kinds of love. You will be filled with emotions which is why I don’t recommend reading this in public. The book will break you over and over again. Jandy Nelson knew exactly how to get to the reader. I have never cried as much as I cried while reading this book. And once I finished it (with way too much tears) I knew I had to read it again, I just needed to get back into the stories again, back into their world for little longer.

If you like John Green’s and Rainbow Rowell’s books, this is a must read for you (and for everyone in general), I know you will absolutely love it. Now enough for today. Thank you if you made it to the end of this blog post!

Have you Read I’ll give you the sun? Did you like it, please share your thoughts because as you can see I am dying to talk about it.

What’s in my bag?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

I consider myself as a very nosy person. There is just something so interesting in normal everyday things such as vlogs, room tours and grocery store hauls. What’s in my bag related posts also always pull me towards. I love to see what other people carry with them everyday and what items they consider as a must haves when they leave their houses. I  have the feeling that I am not the only one, so why don’t we peek into my bag too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Before we start I gotta say this: I always choose a backpack over a bag. They are so much more handy and practical. So no surprise that my Michael Kors backpack is featuring these pictures. Now as that is said let’s take a look at the (way too many) items that I have with me.

Glasses – I got glasses over three years ago and first I hated them so much, now I have learned to accept the fact that I need them so they have become my everyday essential. Besides I really need them for driving.

A hair brush and hair ties – These are a huge must have for a girl who has long hair. I mean it get’s tangled all the time.

Hand clencer – I need my hands to be clean as simple as it is.

Wallet – Do I even need to say why this is a must have?

EarPods – Even though I have driving license I still also use public transports a lot. And being in public transport like a bus without music is just pure torture.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Keys – It’s nice to be able to get into my house you know.

Jungle Juice Bar card – I love Jungle Juice Bar. They make the healthiest and most delicious smoothies and juices.

Mac’s lipstick in shade velvet teddy – This is my go-to lipstick. It matches perfectly with everything so no surprise that it’s always with me when I go somewhere.

Nyx lipliner in shade Naturel – I use this lipliner with the Mac lipstick to get better results. And well, they are just a great combo.

Mac Powder and a brush – To keep away the oiliness from my skin.

Lush Key lime pie lip balm – Lip balm is a must have especially during autumn and winter when my lips tend to dry really easily.

Dermosil walnut hand cream – Okay first of all, I love walnut hand creams they smell heavenly. And second, who likes to have dry hands? Not me at least, I absolutely hate it so yes where ever I go I make sure I have good old hand cream with me.

Dermosil concealer stick – This is another huge must have. I need it with me to touch up my makeup and to keep it in shape. And besides, you never know when a unwanted spot shows up.

Notebook and few pencils –  Just to have something to do when I am bored.

So as you can see I am one of those people who throw everything into their bag just in case. I just really hate the feeling when you realize that you have forgotten something. What about you? What is your bag must haves?

Delicious & healthy banana pancakes

Since the whole world (including me) seems to have fallen in love with eating healthy I thought there is no better time to share a recipe for these delicious, easy and healthy banana pancakes. And with easy I mean oh so easy since you need only two ingredients (maybe three if you want to spice them up a little). These pancakes are perfect for anyone who wants to stick to healthy lifestyle but still craves for something sweet and delicious (as known as me all the time). You can have them basically whenever you like because they are perfect snack but I personally prefer them for breakfast!

Banana pancakes  (makes about 12)

  • 1 banana (the browner the better)
  • 2 eggs
  • Pinch of cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla or honey (I recommend cardamom, it’s my favorite of them all)

Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend until the dough is smooth. Cook them in a mild heat, for example, with rapseed oil. The smaller the pancakes are the easier they are to work with and flip around. I will admit that flipping them is little tricky, but I am sure you will do well. Serve them with some berries, yoghurt or with my personal favorite; a maple syrup.

Note: If you want to be extra healthy you can use only egg whites but you need about four of them. You can also add some protein powder or coconut flakes before blending, adding flour may help the pancakes to stick together better.

Hope you give these a try and enjoy them as much as I do!

300 followers?! | Spreading the blogger love

I can’t believe my small and messy lifestyle blog has already 300 followers, thank you thank you thank you! I honestly didn’t think I would ever get here, but yet here we are thanks to each and every one of you who decided to click that follow button. I honestly can’t thank you enough but just know that I really appreciate all the love and support you are giving for me and my blog.

Couple months back kali said some really sweet and kind words about my blog as she did friends for days tag, and it just really warmed my heart. The idea of the tag is to support other bloggers, compliment each other and get to know new bloggers. You are supposed to tag five new bloggers and two who have been around for longer. I am gonna mix things up a little and just ramble about my favorite bloggers out there, old and new. Because hey, what is better way to celebrate this little milestone than keep spreading the blogger love?

Ingrid D.

I have been following Ingrid since I joined the blogging world. Her content is always on point, she shares her fashion for fashion, traveling and everything in between.  I would never miss any of her posts. Trust me, you can’t help but fall in love with her.

True Bliss

Shelby is one of those bloggers who you just automatically fall in love with. She is always so kind to her followers and I always see her supporting other bloggers. I love to read her beauty based blog posts but that’s not all she writes, her blog is full of great content and thoughts.

Sit back and just live

Jenny is one of the nicest and kindest bloggers I know. Her blog is full of good and unique posts such as thoughts and whatnots where she interacts with her followers about different topics or weekend recaps where she shares her weekend happenings (there is always a lot, this girl if full of energy!). I know you are going to love her so check her out if you haven’t already!

Vanessa’s blog is all about fashion. She knows how to put together an outfit which is why I love love love her style and I am sure you would too! She has amazing and really good quality content so what are you waiting for? Check her out!

Ink on my hands

Kali did nominate me for this tag so I don’t know if I am cheating or what but she is one of my favorite bloggers out there so I need to include her. Her blog is full of great and unique content from thrift store finds to quotes, hauls and so on. So no wonder why I am obsessed with her!

Turning back time

This post would not be complete without giving little shoutout to my lovely friend who is behind the camera in most of my pictures. Please give a read for her blog (you won’t regret it), she has got really high quality content and it’s all about fashion with pinch of food and beauty here and there!!

So that is the list of my favorite bloggers, not all of them but some that popped into my mind while writing this. I love them and I am sure you will too (if you already don’t)!!

Ps. Once more, thank you for 300 followers!

Fresh smoothie bowls for warm summer days

Smoothie bowls are huge thing on every social media nowadays just because they are so pretty and pleasing for the eye. If you know me at all or follow me on social media you are aware of the fact that I am sucker for everything aesthetic. So of course I had to ditch smoothies in glasses for something this beautiful. Even though I have tried quite a few recipes there is so much more to discover because well you can create pretty much any combo of flavors that your heart desires.

So far I have fell in love with chocolate smoothie bowls, what a shocker, I know. But come on fresh, cold, healthy treat with pinch of chocolate who wouldn’t love that? And now you think I will share a recipe for that but no this post is all about tropical and refreshing smoothie bowls. I think these two recipes that I am about to share are perfect for warm summer mornings. Mango pineapple smoothie bowl for those who look for tropical vibes and strawberry banana smoothie bowl for those who want something little bit more sweet.

Mango pineapple smoothie bowl (serves one)

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2dl frozen pineapples
  • 2dl frozen mangoes
  • ½ dl coconut milk (or milk of choice)
  • On top: coconut, chia seeds, passion fruit and mango

Add all ingredients to a blender (not toppings of course) and blend until combined. Pour into a bowl and add the toppings that your heart desires.

Strawberry banana smoothie bowl (serves one)

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2dl frozen strawberries
  • ½ dl coconut milk (or milk of choice)
  • On top: coconut, chia seeds, banana and strawberry slices, dragon fruit

Just like in a smoothie above, add all the ingredients expect toppings to the blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into a bowl and sprinkle with toppings.

Tip: If you want your smoothie to be little bit more sweet add one teaspoon of honey along the ingredients that go to the blender.

As you can see the recipes are really simple and easy to make, it only takes you five minutes. Hope you give these a try and love them as much as I do!

Let’s talk Instagram – how to craft beautiful feed

Feed is a word that’s on everyone’s lips when it comes to Instagram. When you click someones profile first thing you see is their overall feed. If it’s visually appealing you will more likely hit the follow button. So Basically your nine most recent pictures tell everything about your Instagram. But of course the big picture matters too.

I every now and then get asked about my Instagram feed, how I edit my pictures and  how I keep it in shape. Questions like that put big smile on my face because it shows that someone actually pays attention to my outcome. My feed is all about brownish and neutral shades and (right now) pinch of blue. I want my pictures to have good quality. So   yes, I do put effort to my feed which is why I wanted to do a little guide for better and prettier Instagram feed.

My Instagram – ughmango

Light is everything

Taking pictures with natural light leads to pictures with good quality. Don’t try to take them late in the evening when the sun has already set, you will more likely end up with dark and blurry pictures. If you get a vision for perfect picture right before you are going to bed, just simply wait for the next day. Your feed will thank for it later.

For years I didn’t use filters. I didn’t know how to use editing apps and filters so it just felt more natural to leave them all out. But couple months ago I wanted to take the next step and try out a feed with filter. The most important thing about filters is to not overuse them. Pick the amount of how much you want to use one filter (usually you can adjust it) and stick with the same amount in every picture. Pick few filters that you want to use and that match together, even though there is so much pretty ones out there do not try to use them all at the same time.  And remember that not all of your pictures need to include filter, some are perfect the way they are.

Backgrounds matter

If you want to take a picture of something really simple like your lipstick, the background is just as important as the lipstick. If the background is ‘busy’, full of color that usually does not show in your feed or shadowy it’s just won’t work out. Take your time and search for background that is visually pleasing. White wall is always a good idea. Also buying few surfaces won’t harm anyone. I for example own something marble and something wooden that I use as backgrounds.

Follow a theme

When I go out to take pictures it’s easy for me to search for a spot or wall that matches my feed. I know what colors match my feed and what kind of pictures will fit in. Just set few rules for yourself that you will follow with your feed. For example pick few colors that you will stick to, not all your pictures need to have those tones included, just make sure they appear often enough to keep the feed wrapped together. I’m personally not into colorful feeds, but some people handle matching lots of colors together so well which makes their Instagram look amazing.

Plan your feed

I have created private Instagram account to make sure that my next picture matches with my feed. Some people think this is too much but I find it really comforting. If I have lots of new pictures that are waiting to be posted I can just simply plan their publishing order. It also helps you to see if the picture that you are about to post has the same color tone as your former ones.

Let your feed live on

Don’t try to force something that’s just not working out anymore. If there is a theme you have stick to for ages but your resent pictures just don’t seem to fit in anymore, let it go. Your feed should live on just like you do.

But most importantly love what you post

There will always be pictures that just won’t match your feed no matter how much you want them to. But that should be the case only every now and then. You need to be into the pictures you are posting since it’s your Instagram. And people will see through you if you post something to just fit in. Find your inspiration.

A trick to make a picture that just won’t fit in match with your feed: Use black&white filter. It always works out.

Hope this was at least a little helpful. And please remember that these are things that matter to me when it comes to Instagram, I know they are not important to everyone. Comment below what is your key to successful Instagram feed and please share more tips to craft beautiful pictures.
